Why do I need a Will?
If you’ve spent a lifetime pondering what to do with your hard earned money and assets, do you really want strangers deciding who is going to inherit them after you’re gone?
Whilst most of us will have given some thought to making a Will less than 40% will have actually done so. Many will have put it off thinking that it’s something to do ‘when I’m older’ whilst others may think they are tempting fate by putting pen to paper. Whatever your reason is, do you know who will inherit your cherished belongings when you die?
It isn’t always who you might think it would be! Click here to find out.
What does a Will do?
Making a Will means that you can:
- Know that your possessions are going to the people or charities that you care most about.
- Choose people you trust to act as your executors who will make sure that your wishes are carried out.
- Let your family and friends know your funeral wishes
- Appoint guardians for any children you may have who are under the age of 18
- Make sure that anyone who is financially dependent on you is taken care of
- Minimise tax liabilities after your death so that more of your estate goes to your loved ones rather than the State.
- Prevent disputes within your family by making your wishes clear.
What happens if I don’t have a Will?
There is no automatic right to inheritance. Many married people assume their spouse will inherit all that they leave, with or without a will.
This is not the case.
Many unmarried or co-habiting couples assume they have the same legal rights as a married couple.
This is not the case.
Unmarried couples have no guaranteed rights to inherit at all. The only way that married couples or those in civil partnerships can ensure that their estate passes from one spouse/partner to the other without hindrance, is by making a Will.
